Cost Per Class: The Simple Way to Compare Chess Academies

Cost per class chess academies

A Rs 2,999 plan with 8 classes and a Rs 1,599 plan with 8 classes are not close, and a Rs 999 plan with 4 classes is not the same as a Rs 999 plan with 8. The fix is one line of arithmetic.

The formula

Cost per class = total fee ÷ number of classes. Compare plans with the same billing length, because longer plans are usually cheaper per month.

Worked examples

  • The Digital Chessboard, 2 classes a week: Rs 1,599 a month on 6-month billing, about 8 classes a month, so about Rs 200 a class.
  • The Digital Chessboard, 1 class a week: Rs 999 a month on 6-month billing, about 4 classes, so about Rs 250 a class.
  • Madras School of Chess, 6-month plan: Rs 11,700 for 48 classes, about Rs 244 a class (published fee, 1 October 2026).
  • VBS Chess Academy, Beginner course: Rs 6,000 for 8 sessions, about Rs 750 a class (published fee, 1 October 2026).

Four things that change the real price

  1. Billing length. Paying 6 months at once is cheaper per month but needs a bigger payment now.
  2. Batch size. Rs 250 for a class of 6 is better value than Rs 250 for a class of 20.
  3. Class length. A 45-minute and a 60-minute class are not equal. Ask.
  4. Extras. Check if tournaments, study material and reports are included. Ours are.

Use the same method on any academy: monthly fee ÷ classes in that month. If an academy quotes a package, divide the package price by the number of classes it covers.

Adjust for class size and length

A fair comparison also asks how long each class is and how many children are in it. A 60-minute class for 6 to 7 children and a 30-minute class for 15 children are not the same product, even if the cost per class matches. Ask for both numbers in writing.

Add what is included

List what comes with the fee: tournaments, a parent portal, progress reports, parent-teacher meetings, certificates and study material. Our plans include weekly tournament practice, tournament guidance, parent-teacher meetings, progress tracking and Parent Portal access. See pricing for each plan.

Cost per class is a starting point

It tells you what you pay, not what you get. Combine it with the coach's credentials, the curriculum and your child's engagement; read our 10-question checklist and online chess academies compared.
