Affordable Chess Classes in Chennai and Tamil Nadu: Fees Compared (2026)

Tamil Nadu is full of chess academies, which is good for choice but confusing for budgets. If you want affordable chess classes in Chennai or Tamil Nadu, compare fee, commute and class size together.

Competitor fees were read from each academy's own website on 1 October 2026 and can change. We compare published starting prices only. We do not judge other academies' teaching, and several of them are excellent. If you spot an out-of-date figure, email [email protected] and we will correct it quickly.

Typical published fees in Tamil Nadu

• VBS Chess Academy (Chennai branches and online): Rs 6,000 for 8 Beginner sessions, about Rs 750 a class.
• Madras School of Chess (online group): Rs 2,999 for a month of 8 classes, or Rs 11,700 for 6 months (48 classes).
• The Digital Chessboard (live online): Rs 999 a month for 1 class a week, Rs 1,599 a month for 2 classes a week, on 6-month billing.

The hidden cost: the commute

An offline class in Chennai can add an hour of travel each way. Over a month that is a lot of time and fuel. Online classes remove it entirely, which also means fewer missed sessions.

What you still need to check

1. Batch size and class length
2. Coach rating
3. Whether tournaments are included
4. The refund policy
